On June 7, 1987, Washington Dulles International and Washington National Airports were transferred to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority under a 50-year lease authorized by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Act of 1986, Title VI of Public Law 99-500. All property was transferred to the Airports Authority and the Federal government holds title to the lease. Prior to the transfer, the airports were owned and operated by the Federal Aviation Administration in the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is an independent airport authority, created with the consent of the United States Congress to oversee the management, operations, and capital development of the two major airports serving the U.S. national capital.

The primary responsibility of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department is to provide law enforcement services to all employees and persons traveling within our jurisdiction. We believe that all our efforts should be focused on maintaining law and order, detecting and deterring crime, and enforcing all laws, ordinances, and regulations of the jurisdictions in which we work, which include Federal laws, laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Ordinances of the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun, as well as the Airports Authority's Regulations.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has its own, full-service, state (Virginia) accredited police department that patrols airport properties and grounds, including the Ronald Reagan National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Dulles Airport Access Highway, the Dulles Toll Road, including the 300 yards surrounding any of the airports' properties. The Virginia State Police, Fairfax County Police, and the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office also exercise Concurrent Jurisdiction police power over Washington Dulles International Airport property within their respective jurisdictions including the Dulles Airport Access Highway and the Dulles Toll Road. Virginia law also grants concurrent jurisdiction to the Arlington County Police for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
